Teacher pay: DfE suggests 6.5% rise - but over three years

Teacher Pay: Proposed 6.5% Rise Over Three Years

The Department for Education has suggested a 6.5% rise in teacher pay over the next three years in its evidence to the School Teachers' Review Body.

The proposal includes an expectation that most schools will need to implement plans to achieve better value from their existing budget to deliver the pay awards, in addition to the funding provided through the core schools' budget.

Education secretary Bridget Phillipson asked the STRB to make formal recommendations for pay awards for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years, as well as an indicative pay award for the 2028-29 academic year.

The Department for Education's evidence highlights "positive signs that the government's pay strategy is starting to deliver improvements to the recruitment and retention of teachers.

Author's summary: Teachers may receive a 6.5% pay rise over three years.
