LA Mayor Lifts Emergency Declaration on Homelessness

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a 17% drop in street homelessness over two years, lifting the local emergency declaration on homelessness.

Mayor Bass stated that while the crisis persists, the city now has the necessary tools to continue urgent action without the temporary order.

"Therefore, with the city firmly pointed in a new direction on homelessness, I am lifting the official declaration of a state of emergency."

The mayor noted that she would reinstate the declaration if "extraordinary authority" is needed to maintain or accelerate progress on homelessness.

The decision was made as council members discussed phasing out the emergency declaration.
