Poor segregation of waste is causing inefficient processing, leading to health and environmental hazards and poor waste management in Bengaluru.
To address this issue, several steps can be taken, including funding a datajam to identify hotspots, sponsoring community workshops, and supporting information campaigns.
Temple Bells, a 900-flat residential community in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru, has successfully transformed nearly 4–5 tonnes of organic waste into compost every month.
The community uses the two-bin, one-bag system for collection, ensuring efficient source segregation.
By prioritising segregation at source, the residents have drastically reduced what goes to the landfill and turned recyclable waste into a revenue stream.
