Mauritius rethinks coral restoration as reefs suffer from another mass bleaching

Mauritius Rethinks Coral Restoration

Coral reefs can forever change one's view of the ocean with their vibrant colors and glorious landscapes pulsating with marine life.

However, the latest mass coral bleaching episode, which started in 2023 and continued into 2025, has severely impacted coral reefs, leaving much of the coral world struggling to survive.

Mass bleaching occurs when an oceanic heat wave causes widespread damage and death to corals, a phenomenon amplified by the climate crisis.

The island nation of Mauritius, located off the east coast of Africa, is home to nearly 250 species of corals and has not been spared from the devastating effects of mass bleaching.

According to Pierre Edgard Daniel Marie, director of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI), 80% of corals in Mauritian waters were bleached this March due to ocean heat waves.
