The trip highlighted the magnitude of the refugee crisis in both countries, the level of human misery, and the impact of dramatically reduced funding to cope with this crisis, especially from the United States.
According to UNHCR figures, Lebanon absorbed over a million Syrian refugees during the 2011-24 Syrian civil war. Currently, some 350,000 have returned, but many may seek to go back to Lebanon due to dire circumstances at home.
