Twofold Bay's Connection to Whales

Whales hold a significant place in the natural and industrial history of Twofold Bay in southern NSW.

John Walker, a local resident, recalls his first whale sighting as a young man, despite growing up in the area and frequently fishing with his dad.

“In all that time, I never even saw a whale spouting,”

he says, noting that whales had largely disappeared by then.

A rare whale sighting in the mid-1950s caused a stir in the area, with John recalling that his school closed down in the middle of the day to witness the event.
