Whales hold a significant place in the natural and industrial history of Twofold Bay in southern NSW.
John Walker, a local resident, recalls his first whale sighting as a young man, despite growing up in the area and frequently fishing with his dad.
“In all that time, I never even saw a whale spouting,”
he says, noting that whales had largely disappeared by then.
A rare whale sighting in the mid-1950s caused a stir in the area, with John recalling that his school closed down in the middle of the day to witness the event.
