Greece has introduced a new policy where refugees who travel back to their country of origin will have their asylum status revoked.
Following an order by Migration Minister Thanos Plevris, the Asylum Service issued a circular on October 30, 2025, providing instructions for the revocation of asylum status for beneficiaries of international protection who travel to and remain in their country of origin.
Any individual who has been recognized as a refugee in Greece and visits their country of origin, from which they have claimed persecution, will be considered to have provided strong evidence that they are no longer at risk.
As a result, procedures for the suspension of their asylum status will be initiated.
