Opinion: Rethinking State Dinners
NPR's Scott Simon proposes an alternative to traditional state dinners at the White House.
A ballroom at the White House, currently under construction, will be able to seat nearly 1,000 guests for state dinners.
While the ballroom is being built, Simon suggests holding state dinners at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
The State Dining Room at the White House has hosted notable state dinners, including the first one hosted by President Donald Trump with French President Emmanuel Macron in 2018.
The menus of what's served are made public, featuring dishes such as heirloom tomato soup, Iowa rib-eye steak, or Maine lobster.
