On October 25, 2025, federal immigration agents from Border Patrol used tear gas in Old Irving Park, a Chicago neighborhood, just minutes before the scheduled annual Halloween parade.
The incident resulted in the cancellation of the parade. The agents were from Border Patrol under Customs and Border Protection, a separate agency from ICE, both under the Department of Homeland Security.
Some claims stated that ICE "tear gassed children," however, it was unclear how close any children were to the tear gas deployment.
Following the incident, DHS head Kristi Noem denied a request from Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker to pause ICE raids for Halloween.
