Inside Albert Barnes’ extraordinary collection—born from a tough-talking business brain and an egalitarian ethos

Albert Barnes' Extraordinary Collection

Albert Barnes, a physician and chemist, built an impressive collection of art, including works by Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Barnes' life was marked by his tough-talking business brain and egalitarian ethos, which led him to establish Lincoln University, a historically Black institution.

In 1951, Barnes died in a car accident at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of art and philanthropy.

His collection included exceptional early Picassos and room after room of Renoirs, as well as notable works by Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse.
