A Hometown Hero Retires from a Lifetime of Public Service

The retirement of 88-year-old Marvin Moss is being celebrated in central Virginia for his contributions to local history.

Moss, raised in Western Maryland, discovered the wider world at 13 when his uncle, a West Point graduate, invited him and his brother to spend a summer in Panama's Canal Zone.

“We were put on the train to New York, all by ourselves, and went to Pier 64 on the Hudson and got on the USS Panama.”

This experience set the stage for a life of adventure, leading to the creation of a cultural center in Palmyra, Fluvanna County, which includes an Eastern Orthodox monastery and a studio for painting religious icons.

Moss's story is a testament to his dedication to public service and his impact on the community.
