Ilhan Omar
is a Somali-American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party and the first Somali-American in the United States Congress.
Early life and education
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of eight. She grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in international studies and political science.
Legislative career
Omar was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016, representing District 60B in Minneapolis. She won the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 5th congressional district in 2018 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving a district that includes Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs.
