Riot tells us its League of Legends TCG Riftbound has 20 sets lined up already

Riot Games Plans Long-Term Future for League of Legends TCG Riftbound

We spoke with Game Director Dave Guskin about the future of Riftbound, Riot's new League of Legends trading card game. Although many details remain uncertain, Riot has ambitious plans for numerous future sets.

Ambitious Roadmap for Upcoming Sets

The first set of Riftbound, titled Origins, has just been released. However, the design team has already brainstormed ideas spanning several years ahead. Guskin shared that the team envisioned an arc extending up to the year 2030, which could translate to nearly 20 sets in total.

“I think we got up to, like, 2030. So about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets,”

he said, noting that these long-term plans are not yet finalized and represent preliminary sketches more than concrete commitments.

Ongoing Experimentation with Game Design

Riot is actively exploring what a Riftbound set should look like, as the game is still in its early stages. Guskin explained that, as a new entry in the trading card game genre, Riftbound may not follow the established norms set by other TCGs.

“We're a totally new game, and I don't know that I can say that what's worked for other TCGs will work for us,”

he shared, emphasizing Riot’s experimental approach during these initial steps.

Summary

Riot has crafted a visionary, evolving plan for Riftbound, imagining up to 20 sets by 2030, while remaining open to changes as the game develops.
