Sam Smith Opens Up About Liposuction at 13 After Years of Bullying

Sam Smith has shared a rare and honest reflection on their childhood struggles with bullying and body image. During an interview on Penn Badgley's podcast Podcrushed on 5th November, the musician revealed they underwent liposuction surgery at the age of 13 to cope with insecurities related to their weight.

Bullying Focused on Weight, Not Queerness

When asked about growing up queer in Cambridgeshire, Sam explained that teasing was mostly centered around their weight rather than their queerness.

“For me, it was always my weight. My queerness was something that I could handle, and I could have a grasp on it. But my weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about,”

Childhood Surgery with Parental Support

In an effort to stop the bullying, Sam underwent liposuction, a highly invasive procedure involving suctioning fat through a tube inserted into the small intestines, at just 13. They also had chest surgery due to a developing chest.

“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”

Sam's parents were fully supportive of these surgeries despite their young age.

Long-Term Impact

However, Sam noted that the surgery didn’t solve their challenges in the long run, indicating deeper struggles beyond appearance.
