Dan Trachtenberg, the director who revived the Predator franchise, shared his vision for a sequel to Kevin Costner's 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld. Speaking at the premiere of Predator: Badlands, Trachtenberg expressed interest in returning to Waterworld, but not in the form of a movie.
Trachtenberg explained his preference for a different medium:
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
This approach aligns with previous examples where video games continued the stories of iconic movies. For instance, Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009) served as an official sequel to the Ghostbusters film series. Set during Thanksgiving 1991, it takes place two years after the events of Ghostbusters II, following a new recruit trained by the Ghostbusters team investigating paranormal activities in New York City.
Trachtenberg’s idea highlights how video games can offer fresh ways to expand film universes, giving fans a chance to engage with stories through interactive experiences.
