'Othello' Review — David Harewood's Fiery General and Toby Jones' Wicked Iago

Tom Morris directs Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, currently running at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 17 January 2026.

Almost 30 years ago, David Harewood made history as the first Black actor to portray Othello at the National Theatre. Now, he returns to the role of the Moorish general whose trust in his ensign Iago leads to his tragic downfall.

Harewood did not appear in the 1997 production, but recalls that his portrayal then was filled with raw anger, reacting fiercely to Desdemona's suspected betrayal and Iago’s deceit. In this polished West End revival, his Othello initially exhibits calm wisdom gained over the years. However, his composed authority breaks down as he transforms into a volatile figure, overwhelmed by Iago’s manipulations and unable to recognize the true nature of those around him.

“He is no longer able to see those in his orbit for who they are.”

Harewood finds a perfect counterpart in Toby Jones, who plays Iago with cunning and wickedness, delivering a powerful portrayal of the manipulative ensign.
